If you are reading this, you are likely considering Pilates with Jeanna and her team at Pilates Connexion in Swarthmore, and I enthusiastically recommend you go there now and get started. I am 47 years old, and first came to Jeanna after working through severe back pain for several months. Anyone who knows me would describe me as extremely active, and prior to back issues, I was playing full-field 90 minute soccer, backpacking, and trail running on a regular basis. I was not doing enough stretching or recovery work. After many years of intense physical activity, a job requiring significant travel, and overall probably too much sitting, over time I experienced muscle tightness and imbalance leading to spinal and muscle misalignment, and I was out of the game.
I went through several weeks of regular Chiropractic care, which was relevant for the issue, and made significant improvements to my lower back and spine alignment. I also did some successful Physical Therapy, all of which helped.
But after several months of my fitness going to nearly zero, I realized I needed a way to build new balance, flexibility and strength, if I were to be able to return to the activities I enjoy. I did not know anything about Pilates, but it was recommended to me by a colleague who had an uncle with similar issues as mine, who experienced benefit. When I saw the studio in Swarthmore, I signed up for intro sessions.
In my first session with Jeanna, it was clear she knows her stuff (even though I initially had very little idea of what was going on). In taking me through her diagnosis, she was quick to find issues and what was causing them, more so than anyone I've worked with. She sees the details that matter. She quickly addressed issues by putting me through the Pilates techniques, and I walked out of there the first time feeling like I was on a solid path forward.
I signed up for general group classes (the one I do is led by the outstanding Shannan) and private sessions with Jeanna as schedule allows, which I have done for a few months now.
Jeanna's approach to Pilates and it’s healing effect has significantly changed the balance of my whole body, impacting my posture and balance. My core strength has significantly improved—probably as good as it’s been in 25 years—and my flexibility has improved more than 50% over a few weeks and months. I’ve been able to return to backpacking, running, and regular cycling, with my overall well-being restored. At one point in those first few sessions, Jeanna shared why she does this work--she knows how much it helps people. She has more than delivered on this commitment.
I’ve come to believe Pilates is insurance for long-term health and activity. It's more than worth the money. I have a principle to invest in my health when I find something that works, and this works. I would be happy to talk about this if you'd like. An hour of Pilates feels different from a traditional weight-lifting or cardio workout, and it certainly extends into the rest of the day and beyond. If you have issues with tight hips, inflexibility, core weakness, muscle issues, or imbalances in your body, OR, you are looking for a way to improve your long-term fitness and flexibility...go see Jeanna.
